Celebrating the Savage, Hilarious, Disgusting and Adorable World of Little Boys

parenting humor - raising boys

Hulk smash!

This is a blog about boys, in all their mud-splattered, poop-obsessed glory.

Specifically, it’s a blog about MY boys—Milo, who is six as I write this, and Morris, his three-year-old brother.

Milo and Morris are obsessed with three things: guns, poop, and bad guys, not necessarily in that order. For example, consider the following conversation that recently took place at the family dinner table:

Morris: “Mommy, do you know what Daddy plus Daddy equals?”
Me: “Nope.”
Morris: “Daddy plus Daddy equals Mommy!”
Me: “Really.”
Morris: “Uh huh! And Mommy plus Mommy equals Morris!”
Me: “Um, I’m not sure you’ve got your figures straight.”
Morris: “And poo plus poo equals diarrhea!”
Me: “I don’t think I like where this is going…”
Milo: “NO, Morris. Poo plus pee equals diarrhea. Everyone knows that!”

If you found that quote distasteful or offensive in any way, you may want to click away from this blog right now, and possibly reconsider your decision to have boys if it’s not too late, because this kind of potty talk—mixed in with a constant barrage of laser gun blasts and machete slices and brain-devouring zombies—is what living with little boys is all about.

Now, parents who expect their children to grow up to become polite and refined members of society might be alarmed by the frequency in which fecal matter and brutally graphic violence come up in our boys’ conversations. But my husband Rob and I prefer to laugh it off. Why? Because Milo and Morris are hilarious. They make us laugh to the point of tears on a near-daily basis. And that is a gift we think should be encouraged rather than snuffed out. Life is too short not to laugh whenever the opportunity arises. And when Milo and Morris are around, the opportunities arise a LOT.

In this blog, I’d like to share some of their awesomeness with you—and hopefully make you laugh and give you a better appreciation of what it’s like to live in a household that reverberates with the crazy energy of two little boys. (Unless you already live in a boy-infested home, in which case, you know what I’m talking about.)

And if you have young children of your own and are a hectic, overworked parent just like I was when I first started this blog, I hope that it will inspire you to shut off the work-obsessed portion of your brain and pay closer attention to the wonderful things your children say on a daily basis.

Because it’s my firm belief that ALL young children are hilarious. You just need to listen to them in order to unlock their genius.

I hope you enjoy the blog!
